My old friend Heather (Heddo) is expecting lovely little Ava in the not to distant future.
The other day I rediscoverd a song on Fiona Apple's album, Tidal, that moves me greatly. I thought other mothers would also appreciate the lyrics to this lovely tune and therefore decided to post it here. Keep in mind that without the lazy melody, it lacks something. So if you are in a position to errrr....download the song- I strongly recommend it.
PALE SEPTEMBER
lyrics by: Fiona Apple
Pale September
I wore the time like a dress that year
The autumn days swung soft around me like cotton
on my skin
But as the embers of the summer
lost their breath and disappeared
My heart went cold and only hollow rhythms resounded
from within
But then he rose brilliant as the moon in full
and sank within the burrows of my keep
And all my armour falling down
in a pile at my feet
And my winter giving way to warm
as I'm singing him to sleep
He goes along just like a water lily
Gentle on the surface of his thoughts his body floats
Unweighed down by passion or intensity
Yet unaware of the depth upon which he coasts
And he finds a home in me
For what misfortune sows, he knows my touch will reap
And all my armour falling down,
in pile at my feet
And my winter giving way to warm,
as I'm singing him to sleep

How beautiful-
I'll have to listen to that song again- I love the application you made. I do appreciate it from a mother's perspective.
Did your Papa Nick do the sketch of Mother & Child?
How lovely Ashley...
I read this post yesterday, & had to go home & pop in TIDAL. Nice because I haven't listened to that CD for some time; but I really like your application of "Pale September". Nice. This mommy appreciates a new way to hear that already lovely moody song. One of my favorite "Mama-songs" is "Zion" by Lauren Hill accompanied by Carlos Santana.
By the way, did your Papa Nick do the Mother & Child drawing? If so, or not it's beautimous!
Yes, I like the song 'Zion' also. Very much.
My g'father didnt do this picture. I found it in an odd 'image search' on google. I tried to find out who did it but couldnt. I can't wait to get my art board set up so I can start doing some stuff.
I really love the way Fiona Apple's imagery works in her music. Pale September does a great job with the implication of depression that many women feel during late pregnancy along with the joy of discovery when they see their child.
Yes- that does really work well. I am curious if Fiona Apple was (or is) a mother when she wrote that song. I know she was quite young when Tidal came out. Particularly remarkable if she was able to tap into (or hit on) that emotion without having experienced it from a mother's perspective. Anyway... I ramble.
That is so sweet. We just pulled in from our trip to MN. So that is why it has taken me so long to respond. I love the post and will have to listen to the song. I absolutly love the picture too. How sweet of you to dedicate a post to me and baby Ava. Loley so much!!
