So, here is our neighbor's tobacco/corn field. This is a very large crop, only about 1/3 of it made the picture. He actually has more corn than tobacco. I love August around here because no matter what sordid purpose the crop may fulfill, it is downright beautiful.
This particular field of tobacco is directly across from our land so it's nice to wake up each morning to this lovely expanse of yellow. This morning the mist was settled over it in a way that made it especially pretty. The fog over the hills kind of makes everything that much more serene and spectacular.
In about a week, this field (which is harvest-ready) will be cut down and little teepees of drying tobacco will be scattered over the dark soil. Then the teepees will be hung to dry in a barn and the field will be naked and sad. But while it lasts, it's awfully nice.
So the next time you see a cadaver-ish woman in cut offs and tank top standing stoop shouldered in front of your neighborhood wal mart, frowning as she lights her cigarette and pursing her wrinkled lips over that first tast of poison-just remember that at one time, the tobacco at least was pretty.

Love the photo- It reminds me of driving home from Florida several years back, around this time of year. I guess we were in Kentucky, but I remember seeing these fields of big lovely leafy plants. I thought they were so exotic, like something from an Henri Rousseau painting. Too bad humans have come up with such a vile use for something so perfect & lovely.
