My feelings exactly. Heh heh heh heh.
Out of the mouths of babes: My son says to me this morning in that no nonsense thoughtful tone of his : 'mommy, why do people give gifts to each other on Jesus' birthday?' Very good question m'dear.
Aye Christmas...how I dislike thee.
Isnt it strange that when people ask you why you don't celebrate they don't REALLY want to know the reason? When you try to explain your feelings about the pagan origins and such, I've found that most people suddenly have a million other things to do. Recently I tried to condense the explanation when someone asked it of me by saying: 'Have you ever looked up the history of christmas and its traditions in the encyclopedia?' The response ? 'Oh, I don't have time for that stuff....'
And so it goes...

You're right though- very rarely do people want to know the real origins or reasons for our non-participation. I like your approach. I think I'll try it. I'm always amazed at how UNjoyful people are this time of year- often downright surly in the grocery stores & such. Alas... I don't miss it.
Yeah, the 'mask of joyfulness' really comes off when that last Playstation 3 exits the shelf, doesnt it? I worked at Toys R Us for one season back before I was married. It was astonishing how sad everyone seemed. But it would never occur to them to give it up, even to those who don't celebrate for regligious reasons or care about honoring Christ.
After all, you don't 'mess with tradition' in this country, I've discovered.
It is amazing! I recently started work outside of my parents little business and have had to deal w/Christimas Parties, and such. And you are right, when I try to explain why I won't be attending people's eyes roll back into their head and they seem so bored and miserable I lose my train of thought.
Frustrating.
Yes, our department party is this afternoon and though my immediate team is well aware of my beliefs, some others in the department are just finding out. It's like watching a deer in headlights. I love it!
All I know is that I'm taking advantage of the two hours to go out for Thai food!
