strep throat - an infection of the oral pharynx and tonsils by streptococcus
Friday's doctor visit confirmed it. I am suffering from strep throat for the THIRD time this year. Even the doctor called it 'excessive' and tells me I may have to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist for a second opinion that could result in the removal of my tonsils! But I don't wanna remove them...they're mine! I've had them my whole life...sniff.
The wierd thing is, I've never had strep prior to this year. In 2000, prior to my first son's birth, I tested positive when the doctor did the mandatory strep test and therefore I had to stay an extra night in the hospital while they tested him and such. In 2004, when I was pregnant w/ Nathan, I didnt test positive so...go figure. It is also possible the husband is giving it to me via his yummy kisses but I am not going to be believing that for now.
So here I am kicking with fever, shaking and shivering and cursing, unable to eat or drink, miserably downing my antibiotics...and getting used to it? There's something wrong w/ this picture!

Ahh! :( I am soo sorry! You poor thing! I can't believe it's the THIRD time you've had it this year! I hope that you get better soon and that this is the last time you have it for a long time. I always like Hot and Sour soup piping hot when I have strep. Course' nothing really tastes good when it hurts so flippin bad to even swallow your own spit. :( Poo.
Oh Ashley!!!!!!!!!!!
Me Too!!!
Mine started Friday (which began so beautifully with snow & no school & work for me & kiddos!) I've been off & on sick for 2 months- sinus & other related yuckiness. I tried to sleep but each little swallow produced such exquisite pain. Between the shivers, body aches & excruciating pain- you know... Then once I d r a g g e d myself to the Urgent Care (what happened to the good ol' days when they made house calls?), I had to wait an hour 1/2 to be seen & the nurses were all like, "So you THINK you have strep. Y' sure it's just not a bad sore throat?" Lucky for them I was too sick to be mad or really even speak. So I happily received my nasty horse pills. Horrible, but I know how well they always work. Fever broke last night(& I had a sudden miraculous craving for a ham sandwich- which I was able to eat along w/ 5 potato chips! REAL FOOD- not Jello & soup) & now I'm home from work. Hubby took kids to school. I feel gross & for some reason I itch. After this I'm going to do some research. Is it the strep? antibiotic? too much aspirin? my head?!
I've wondered if I do need my tonsils & ad noids out. I've been so regularly sick (this from a girl who never got sick once upon a time). I feel like my doctor just treats my symptoms at hand & not the root cause. If losing some glands can give me better quality of life, I feel resigned to do it. This is my second strep this year, along with 2 sinus infections. But I know the feeling of not wanting to give up something of yourself!
I'm pulling for you sister!! Hang in there!
Love-
Jodi
By the way, I can see from your face how bad you feel, but your bangs look great!
Jodi,
I think the itchiness is the antibiotic...what kind did they put you on? I was put on the 'z-pack' the other two times and it kicked it out really quick but now it's back so this time they put me on cefaclor (which I forgot to take this morning so thanks for reminding me!) and it's taking much longer to feel better but it's a longer dosage so hopefully it will get rid of it for good so I can keep my tonsils.
ANYhooooo, I too am havin some itchiness and my cold is still lingering since it's viral. Yuck.
We...will...TRIUMPH!
(thanks for the bangs compliment thought...heh heh)
I am SOOO sorry!! I had strep two weeks ago and it was the first time I had ever had it. No one told me HOW PAINFUL it is! I couldn't believe it! (I did learn something new - that little thing that hangs in the back of your throat is called a uvula.) When I first woke up with the most horrible sore throat I had ever experienced, and swollen glands and swollen uvula, I went to the Minute Clinic. The strep test was negative, so they said it was viral and to take Advil to reduce the swelling. Two days later, in worse pain, I went to my real doctor and their strep test came back positive. I was so happy. (If it had been negative, I was prepared to cry like a baby and beg for drugs like an addict, it hurt so bad!) They were going to give me a prescription, but I told them that I was going out of town in a few days and they gave me a shot. Worked wonders! No pills to worry about and by that evening, I could swallow without tears.
Hope you feel better soon!
Belive me, Lisa, I have BEGGED for that shot! They told me it is a derivitive of penicillin and since I'm allergic, I wasnt allowed to have it.
Anyway, I can swallow painlessly now so maybe things are looking up. Now I just have itchy throat and congestion so a cold is still evidently in the works
You poor thing. It's horrible that you have had it 3 times.
I have managed not to have it since I was a kid. With that being said, I will get it tomorrow.
