Yes, deer can be very pretty. Right now, there are scads of them all over the county. Frolicking on the frosted hills in the morning, standing and gazing with soulful eyes when they're disturbed, dancing into roadside bushes at dusk w/ a flash of their perky white tails. I sit on my window seat daily with my two older sons and stare at them as they forage our hillside for food and brazenly ignore my huge puppy's ominous barking. They walk by the kitchen window in droves every morning as I get my boys their breakfast and we have shared a few magical moments watching them. Sweet li'l Bambi.
Stupid Bambi. Friday night, I was on my way home from Carthage w/ my tiny son in tow and a sackful of Sonic by my side. It was already dark, though barely 7pm, and I had my brights on since the highway was mostly deserted at the moment. POW! From out of nowhere a huge buck ran into the road and I slammed into him at a full 60 mph! I saw him fly into the air, bend in half, and come down flopping in the yard to my right-his long legs flailing helplessly. Fortunately for Victor and I, no one was hurt and I was surprisingly self-possessed as I brought my smoking car to a halt on the shoulder and got out to assess the damage. As you can see, I hit him absolutely DEAD CENTER and not only is my hood and fender horribly messed up but I think my radiator is shot. Part of the headlight assembly has disappeared also and who knows what else was causing all the smoke and leaking fluids. My poor Honda! (As most of you know, I just got this car in May and I love it dearly!)
After checking on Victor, who was frowning but fine, I flagged down a passing motorist for help. You can't get a cellphone signal on this particular highway but luckily, this guy was a fireman and able to radio in to the police. He also had a special cellphone w/ a stronger signal so he called my husband for me. No one was able to find the deer, which I find very unsettling. All that and no deer carcass to show for it? How is this possible?
So now I'm without a vehicle. I know that since my car was older and had alot of miles, the damage may ammount to more than the vehicle is worth and the insurance company may total it out. This would make me very sad since I searched so hard to find this car and it will be difficult to replace. But it would also be a blessing in that I wouldnt have to pay that stupid 250.00 deductible.
On the way home, my husband said 'Now, do you see why they need to be hunted?' I laughed and said 'Yes, I do. It's just a shame this one had to die without my getting to claim even one steak.'

I am happy to hear you guys are okay - but what a scare that must have been!
Hope you get wheels again soon.
Oh my goodness! I have a fear of running into a deer, and every time I see one on the side of the road, I drive really slow the rest of my ride. I'm surprised it didn't roll up onto your windshield. It's so fortunate that you guys didn't get hurt. Sometimes you're injured forever in a little nothing accident, and sometimes you hit a buck and walk away unscathed. Thank goodness it was the latter!
And I miss yall too, I was telling Craig that it would be nice to be able to go "north" and see my mom and you guys and the Ayres' fam pretty soon. We'll see!
I'm so glad y'all are OK. That is so scary.
What tha heck! Thank goodness yall are ok! And that royally stinks about your car. :( Toby was informing us that you posted this and I was telling him also that the dang deers always seem to walk away! I have heard multiple running in to deer stories and in every single flippin' one the stupid deers trot away! I do not understand! This chick I was in class with last semester came in one day all ticked off and tells me I have to come see her car afterwards. She was doing about 45 and waddayaknow outta nowhere comes a deer and she swerved but it still creamed the heck out of her side of the car. She could no longer use her door because the whole side was caved in. But here's the best part. She then points out a ginormous mass of brown splattered down the side. Yes, the deer was so scared it crapped itself while being hit and it flew all over the side of her car. She was so ticked off and I couldn't even speak I was laughing so hard. But yes, after the fact, the deer gets up kinda looks around like, "whoa! What was that!?" and trots away back in to the woods. Insane!
Whoops. I posted that last comment as Tina. Sorry. Alas, it was me and I'm not what you might call "observant." :D
I'm just glad to hear you all are OK!
I'm surprised to hear that the deer are OK too! Until now, I've only known two people to hit deer with their cars (my mother being one of them) and those suckers weren't getting up afterwards. You all must grow them tough out here!
Ha Ha...Um I can't help but think of Tommy Boy.
Uh sorry about you r car but DUDE! That was awesome!
LOL!
Hey, I am glad ya'll are safe and sound though!
